PKN talks... paper-based packaging: past, present and future with Andrew Pooch, MD of Tetra Pak Oceania.

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, managing editor & publisher of PKN Packaging News and Andrew Pooch, managing director of Tetra Pak Oceania talk about paper-based packaging manufacturer Tetra Pak's past, present and future as the company marks 60 years in Australia.

The episode starts with Pooch discussing Tetra Pak's history, its innovations including the Sunny Boy ice-confection packaging and the introduction of the company’s fully renewable milk packaging in 2019 adopted by Brownes Dairy in Western Australia. Pooch also covers the evolution of milk packaging over the years along with Tetra Pak's entry into the processing of dairy and other food products to complement its packaging business.

We also discuss the range of products and innovation in the market that is being driven by changing consumer needs, including the customisation of products, the boom in non-dairy alternatives and the importance of paper-based packaging for the environment. Pooch talks about the expansion of Tetra Pak's product range over the past 30 years which leads to a discussion of the Tetra Recart, a sustainable alternative to glass jars and metal cans for wet food products like tomatoes and corn.

We wrap up the episode with a discussion on Tetra Pak's sustainability ethos, its commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its end-to-end supply chain and a look at what's next for the industry given population growth, demand for western-style quality products and the push to reduce food waste.
