PKN talks... Taking Action on Reuse: Implementing Smarter Packaging Systems.

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, managing editor and publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks to Belinda Chellingworth from BC Consulting about how we can implement reuse systems to replace single-use packaging.

We begin by examining how ‘reuse’ differs from recycling, as it involves using packaging again in its original form without reprocessing, thereby maintaining its circularity. The discussion explores the current state of reuse systems in Australia, highlighting how business-to-business (B2B) models can be highly effective and how they differ from business-to-consumer (B2C) systems. Belinda shares insightful tips on improving reuse systems and key considerations when updating packaging technologies.

We also delve into the role of businesses and legislation in educating consumers about reuse systems, and how behaviour change at home can contribute to waste reduction. The conversation covers practical actions to reduce food waste, ways to stay motivated rather than overwhelmed, and how to tackle the challenges within our control.

We wrap up by assessing the impact of community movements such as Plastic Free July and how small changes — both personal and business-driven — can contribute to significant waste reduction.
