Sustainable packaging is set to take centre stage at FoodTech QLD 2025, running from 19–20 June at the Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre. Exhibitors will showcase innovations aimed at reducing environmental impact, with a strong focus on alternatives to plastic packaging.

Queensland-based Sedl Agencies is introducing a paper-based pallet wrapping solution to replace traditional plastic stretch film, a major contributor to single-use plastic waste in the food supply chain. “Introducing paper wrap at this level is a game-changer,” said a spokesperson for Sedl Agencies. “Although evaluating the commercial viability of paper over plastic is challenging, especially with the current price differential, it opens up crucial dialogue with businesses who are serious about hitting their sustainability goals.”

In response to the cost and scalability concerns associated with paper, Sedl is also offering what it calls greener plastic alternatives, aimed at reducing plastic usage and packaging waste by over 50 per cent.

“We understand that for many businesses, price is still a major barrier to change,” the spokesperson said. “That’s why we work closely with clients to explore a range of sustainable solutions that not only support their environmental goals but also reduce overall landfill contributions and packaging costs.”

According to Waste Management Review, around 80,000 tonnes of stretch film are used annually in Australia for pallet wrapping, with limited infrastructure available for recycling. Sedl’s system is pitched as a practical option for manufacturers aiming to lower their carbon footprint.

Australian Wrapping Company will also be exhibiting, with a focus on vacuum packaging and shrink film for meat, poultry and seafood. The company offers recyclable and high-barrier films that maintain food safety and help reduce waste by extending shelf life.

Viking Food Solutions, which supplies processing and packaging machinery, is highlighting its automation systems designed to cut down both food waste and material use. Its range includes vacuum packing, MAP (modified atmosphere packaging), and tray sealing systems, along with recyclable materials and biodegradable trays.

In addition to packaging materials, Viking's offering ties together automation and sustainability in a push to support manufacturers in lowering environmental impact.

FoodTech QLD 2025 will bring together these and other exhibitors in packaging, processing and technology, targeting sustainability outcomes across the supply chain.
