The Australian Council of Recycling (ACOR) has reiterated the importance of recycling, even in this time of global pandemic.

In a statement, ACOR discussed several aspects to consider regarding recycling, saying the environmental and economic benefits of recycling means it should be continued during the “very challenging” Covid-19 period.

ACOR said the demand for packaging and packaged goods by consumers and the essential food and beverage sector has increased since Covid-19 due to changed consumptions patterns. “Recyclate, including paper/cardboard, metals, plastics and glass, is an important part of meeting that increased demand for safe packaging,” the council said.

“As a result of changed consumption patterns, the material flows in recycling are currently different (with supermarkets generating unprecedented material, as one example, and the continuation of important construction activity, as another).

“The needless disposal of such material – be it cardboard, glass, plastic, metals, or construction and demolition materials – to landfill is an unnecessary waste of resources, a job reducer, and has virtually no health benefit. Circular supply chains are a constant and their interruption at any point is a major problem.”

It also pointed out that recycling jobs are known to be low risk in terms of infectious diseases, and physical distancing is already an inherent part of recyclate collection. Also, ACOR said that recycling is a steady job provider, even in these times of growing unemployment.

Food & Drink Business editor Kim Berry's take on the big news stories this week, and what caught her eye overseas. How will the Future Made in Australia Act actually be delivered? Shanghai trials traffic light labelling, and Solar Food, making protein out of (virtually) nothing at all, opens its commercial scale facility (that's it in the pic).

Food Frontier’s industry leading annual alternative proteins conference, AltProteins 24, is on in Melbourne on 10 October, with early bird tickets now available.

CSIRO has released a new report Responsible Innovation at CSIRO detailing how the national science agency is designing and delivering leading-edge research to benefit everyone.
