The Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) has hosted Australia’s first single use plastic workshop in Adelaide, with more than 70 participants in attendance.

Representatives from all levels of government plus packaging designers and manufacturers; businesses; retailers; industry associations; academics; and community organisations turned out to the workshop, titled The How to of Phasing out Problematic and Unnecessary Single Use Plastic Packaging.

Coordinated by APCO, the workshop is part of the organisation’s efforts to deliver on the 2025 National Packaging Targets, including the phasing out of all problematic and unnecessary single-use plastic packaging in Australia by 2025.

Brooke Donnelly, CEO of APCO, said she was pleased to have Josh Teague MP, member for Heysen and chair of the Natural Resources Committee in the South Australian Parliament, deliver the keynote on behalf of David Speirs, SA minister for environment and water.

“It was fantastic to welcome Mr Josh Teague MP to speak on behalf of Minister Speirs, a great advocate and champion for addressing problematic and unnecessary single use plastic packaging in Australia.

“It’s an honour to be part of this great collaborative effort here in the leading circular city of Adelaide, as we define a pathway forward for how we translate the current national policy work into tangible outcomes for our local communities,” she said.

The workshop focused on understanding policy approaches nationally, as well as the role of organisations within their supply chain; it also helped APCO to define the program of work in this space for 2020.
