Amcor and French organic snack producer Alter Eco have introduced a recyclable, paper-based and reduced-weight packaging solution for Alter Eco’s 200-gram chocolate bars.

Amcor says the redesign replaces the previous cardboard sleeve and aluminium foil wrap, achieving weight reductions of up to 61 per cent, depending on the variant. The packaging uses AmFiber Performance Paper, which Amcor says can be recycled in the paper stream in France and is FSC-certified. It also aligns with CEPI and 4evergreen recyclability guidelines.

Anne Descarsin, R&D pack manager for Alter Eco, said, “Designing a thinner packaging that still protects the chocolate and preserves its organoleptic qualities is a true technical challenge and a major step forward for Alter Eco.”

Janice Narainsamy, senior product development engineer at Amcor, said, “Paper-based packaging combines strong shelf appeal with a well-established perception of sustainability. With the right barrier performance, it can also deliver the protection needed for demanding applications like chocolate. Alter Eco’s transition to AmFiber Performance Paper demonstrates this in a real market context, delivering a significant reduction in packaging weight.”

Amcor says the redesign also addresses the challenge of one variant containing almonds, maintaining a smooth appearance despite the textured product surface. The company worked with Alter Eco and Swiss chocolate co-packer HALBA to implement the new packaging.
