Artificial intelligence took centre stage at Pack Expo International 2024, helping drive significant sustainability achievements at North America’s premier packaging and processing event.

Through a collaboration between Dow, PMMI, Independent Recycling Services, and McCormick Place, the event successfully diverted over 284 tons of waste from landfills, showcasing the power of innovation in waste management.

Pack Expo saw the pilot trial of OSCAR Sort, an intelligent waste-sorting system that engaged attendees in correctly disposing of waste.

A key initiative was the introduction of AI-powered recycling technology, with McCormick Place piloting OSCAR Sort, an intelligent waste-sorting system that engaged attendees in correctly disposing of waste. The technology improved recycling efficiency and was met with strong attendee participation and positive feedback, underscoring the potential of AI in enhancing sustainability efforts.

“New partnerships, bolstered by emerging technologies, are transforming how we approach event recycling,” said Cullyn Doerfler, sustainability coordinator at Independent Recycling Services. “This collaboration demonstrated how AI and collective action can drive meaningful change.”

The 2024 event implemented a range of sustainability initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impact. In addition to AI-powered recycling, McCormick Place utilised renewable energy certificates to offset 100% of its electricity use during the event. Approximately 1.05 tons of food scraps were processed through the Grind2Energy program, converting waste into renewable energy. Energy-efficient LED lighting and occupancy sensors further helped to minimise power consumption.

Pack Expo also made strides in reducing single-use plastics, replacing plastic water bottles with aluminium cans and water dispensers. A materials donation program allowed exhibitors to contribute non-perishable food items and booth furniture to local charities, including the Salvation Army and Fight2Feed.

The collective efforts resulted in a 51% waste diversion rate, conserving nearly two million gallons of water and over one million kilowatt-hours of electricity – equivalent to the annual energy use of approximately 100 American households.

“At Dow, we believe that collaboration is essential for driving meaningful change,” said Izabel Assis, North America Commercial VP, Packaging & Specialty Plastics at Dow. “For the second consecutive year, Pack Expo International has showcased the power of partnership in advancing circularity within the packaging industry. By working together, we can make significant progress toward our shared sustainability goals.”

McCormick Place continues to lead by example as one of the largest convention centres in the U.S., investing in renewable energy and waste reduction strategies. “Our commitment to sustainability is a responsibility we take seriously,” said Larita Clark, CEO of the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority. “The results from Pack Expo International reaffirm our dedication to reducing environmental impact and creating a greener future for events.”

With over 2700 exhibitors and more than 48,000 attendees, Pack Expo International 2024 highlighted the packaging industry’s commitment to circularity. Dow will continue as the official Sustainability Partner for Pack Expo Las Vegas 2025, further strengthening industry efforts toward a more sustainable future.
