FINAT’s 34th label awards ceremony was held in Monaco last week. Its 241 awards entries represented 49 companies from 25 countries, and included two newcomers this year, Ile de la Reunion and Latvia. Australia won a Best in Group with Collotype Labels topping the Marketing/End-Uses category for its La Bohème label for De Bortoli Wines.

The results are:

Best Show and Group Winners

1. The Best in Show and Printing Processes Group: Multi Labels, United Kingdom for The Irishman Single Malt label. The label scored highly in both design and technical prowess, with its generous use of delicate gold hot foiling especially in the signature and reversed out areas. It used 10 colours to achieve the finished result along with embossing and varnishing in a single pass – and is a combination of the best attributes of the flexo and screen processes.

 2. The Marketing/End-Uses Group: Collotype Labels, Griffith, Australia for De Bortoli Wines – La Bohème. The complexity of the flowers surrounding the central figure and use of a subtle buff colour add to its visual interest. The six colours were printed using offset lithography and finished off with a satin varnish.

 3. The Non-Adhesive Group: Masterpress S.A., Poland, for Heineken The Future – Limited Edition. The use of silver foiling makes the label stand out on the bottle. It conquered the printing challenge of using 9 colours, UV and solvent flexo and gravure.

 4. The Innovation Group: The Schreiner Group GmbH & Co. KG, Germany for Pharma-Tac Plus label. It combines an information booklet integrated with two peel off parts for documentation purposes and a strong hanger so that the bottle may be suspended on a rack. 9 colours and a combination of printing processes offer a solution to an ongoing medical issue of providing information along with the infusion.

Later in the year FINAT will be selecting the best labels from this year's winners to represent FINAT in the forthcoming WLA judging which will take place the day before Labelexpo.
