The 19th IAPRI World Conference on Packaging in Melbourne is getting close to opening day, 15 June. If you haven't booked yet, here are more reasons why you might want to do that...

At the close of submissions, IAPRI had received 135 paper submissions from 300 authors, 100 organisations across 29 countries addressing the theme of 'Responsible Packaging for a Global Market'. Think of this conference as giving access to the knowledge of the world at your doorstep. Or simply, my business needs this.

Examples of topics are:

1. Research of lean packaging technology and logistics optimisation [China]

2. Microwaveable Packaging for Heating and Crisping a Food Product [Switzerland]

3. Plasma enhanced surfaces for sustainable fibre based packaging [Denmark]

4. Study of the Barrier Properties of Zein-Oleic Acid Blend Films [Brazil]

5. Developments in Antimicrobial Food Packaging Research [Australia]

Two of the conference's keynote speakers have also been confirmed: Nina Cleeve-Edwards, packaging specialist at Nestlé Australia and John Kettle from VTT, Finland.

Cleeve-Edwards is responsible for the innovation, design, safety, compliance, and environmental performance of Nestlé Oceania's packaging. She commenced in the packaging field in 2006 and completed the Packaging Diploma course from the Institute of Packaging UK in 2008. She spent four years based in the Nestlé Research Centre in Lausanne, Switzerland, where she was an Ecodesign Specialist and rolled out a packaging ecodesign tool throughout the company and performed research on bioplastic applications for Nestlé packaging. She has a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Commerce from the University of New South Wales.

Kettle is VTT’s international development manager and has more than 25 year’s experience in several fields of industrial R&D. He won the 2012 VTT Award for outstanding individual performance.
Last year, VTT carried out a study for the South Australian government to find new products for its forestry industry; one of the potential solutions identified was entering the value added packaging materials and bio-materials market.

Immediately following the IAPRI conference is the 2014 Australasian Packaging & Industrial Paper Market Outlook Forum, jointly hosted by Appita and IndustryEdge. If you're attending IAPRI, you might also want to include 19-20 June in your diary for this event. The forum intends to untangle and examine the complex challenges that Australasia’s fibre packaging and industrial paper market will continue to confront, at the very least until the end of 2015. This forum will also address issues surrounding food contact packaging in its Food Contact Packaging Mini-Forum, with a focus on compliance legislation and guidelines, process, supply chain responsibilities and compliance testing relating to food contact.
