PKN has joined the Australian Packaging and Processing Machinery Association to announce that submissions are open for the 2013 APPMA Awards of Excellence, to be awarded on 8 May as a highlight of AUSPACK PLUS in Sydney next year.

Sponsored by PKN, Midway Metals, Schenker and SMC, the biennial awards are designed to recognise innovative and outstanding packaging and processing solutions.

“Companies that enter these biennial awards are recognised for their contribution and outstanding achievements against their peers within the wider packaging industry and we encourage everyone to enter,” the chairman of the APPMA, Mark Dingley, said.

Awards categories include Export Achievement, Design Achievement, Customer Partnership, Imported Equipment, Best New Product, and the APPMA Scholarship.

2013 EXPORT ACHIEVEMENT AWARD


The Export Achievement award is bestowed on companies that have made a worthwhile contribution to an existing or new export market. Contributions can include establishing a new market or achieving a significant increase in sales by both the supplier and the customer, identifiable by monetary gain from an export activity.

It can also be awarded to a company that has developed packaging or processing machinery sold into overseas markets which contributes to improved business outcome, efficiency, sales and profit increases.

The 2011 winner was Accuweigh/BudPak for the PLA-G series of net weighers. The PLA-G series of net weighers, are designed for high speed, high accuracy weighing of free-flowing products (such as refined sugar) in capacities from 500g up to 3000g.

2013 DESIGN ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

The Design Achievement award recognises the development of a packaging or processing line or module that results in the significant advancement of packaging and processing technology by either introducing a new idea or modifying an existing principle. The design concept and implementation are weighted highly in the award decision, where better business performance must be achieved.

The 2011 winner was Matthews for iDSnet. iDSnet goes well beyond the compliance requirements of print and application of labels and date coding, and provides a solution to a growing problem for manufacturers' Package Code Management.

2013 CUSTOMER PARTNERSHIP AWARD

The Customer Partnership award emphasises the customisation of packaging and processing machinery required to suit a customer’s individual needs. The winner must demonstrate that the end user has experienced increased sales, increased plant efficiency and profitability. Customer improved outcomes will form a very large element of the award decision.

The 2011 winner was Fibre King, in partnership with Amcor, to develop the laminator/tray erector. One of the most significajnt projects that Fibre King has undertaken in its 85-year history, the laminator has delivered significant changes to the meat industry.

2013 IMPORTED EQUIPMENT AWARD

The Imported Equipment award recognises the efforts of an APPMA Member or eligible company to promote their overseas principal’s equipment in the Australian market.
The equipment must be principally designed by an overseas supplier who is represented by an APPMA member or company eligible to be an APPMA member.

Any developed packaging or processing machinery sold into Australia must demonstrate an increase in efficiency, sales and profit.

The 2011 winner was insignia for the Domino M-Series label applicator. The insignia entry stood out for its ability, using the Domino M-series label applicator, to print and apply labels to cartons at high speed.

2013 BEST NEW PRODUCT AWARD

The Best New Product award is designed to recognise the most innovative product or equipment in the packaging and processing industry that is launched in Australia for the first time during AUSPACK PLUS 2013.

Key criteria for the award are that the equipment or product must have proven efficiency and productivity gains, be innovative and have proven and improved cost of ownership.

The 2011 winner was Schütz DSL for its Eco Bulk MX-EX EVOH six layer intermediate bulk container (IBC) which was re-developed for application in the food industry.

The IBC demonstrated an innovative design and development approach that opened up the potential for major exports - including back to the IBC’s original country of development.

2013 APPMA SCHOLARSHIP

The APPMA is also seeking a packaging engineer looking to further their education through the internationally recognised AIP Diploma in Packaging Technology.

The 2012 scholarship winner was technical officer at Betta Foods Australia, Anna Roland, who has had the opportunity to work within the food and packaging industries and has completed various projects including assisting in film sealing.

The federal government is conducting a review of the Horticulture Code of Conduct, following several difficult years for farmers and growers, with rapidly rising levels of dissatisfaction.

The federal government has committed to developing an Industry Code of Practice for labelling plant-based protein products, supported by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) research and led by the Alternative Proteins Council (APC).

Consumers may soon see products containing cocoa-free chocolate appearing on shelves, as confectionery manufacturers look to manage increased volatility in the price and supply of cocoa beans, according to research from agribusiness banking specialist, Rabobank.
