In its first move into the retail fish packaging market, Australian bioplastics supplier Plantic Technologies has secured an agreement to supply its trays to fresh fish processor and distributor, Profish Food BV of the Netherlands.

Under the agreement, Profish will use the Australian company's Plantic eco Plastic trays to pack its retail offerings in the European market. The trays are designed to improve the carbon footprint and energy requirements of fresh food packaging, and are made of up to 80 per cent commercially grown and certified bio-based raw materials.

Profish is the first fish company to adopt the Plantic eco Plastic technology. Plantic chief executive, Brendan Morris, told PKN, however, the company was in discussion with apoproximately “half a dozen” other potential fish market customers around the world to use the trays.

“It is very exciting, it is our first major fish account. Plantic has been selling the Plantic eco Plastic trays into other market sectors like dairy, meats and ready meals, but this is a new opportunity for the company,” he told PKN.

He said the trays were well-suited for Profish's products.

“The ultra-high barrier performance of Plantic eco Plastic trays aims to keep products fresher and at peak quality for longer – up to ten tims longer than anything else on the market,” he said.

“This is a great fit for the high quality fish packs from Profish. It is a milestone for both barrier packaging and green business innovation.”

Profish managing director Frank Schreur, said the decision to use the Plantic trays underlined how seriously his company took its environmental obligations.

“For many years we have sourced and packed sustainable fish and now we are doubling up by using sustainable trays,” he said.
