If you thought earthbound packaging supply chains were complex, spare a thought for the folk at NASA, who must pack food for weightless conditions, then send the portions on their way into orbit.

In the latest clip on PKN TV, NASA food scientist Vickie Kloeris at Johnson Space Centre's Space Food Laboratory takes viewers inside the agency's dedicated packaging room.

The facility is described as a super clean room, with equipment and processes to filter out contaminants and package food for astronauts on the International Space Station.

Kloeris demonstrates how food and beverages are freeze-dried and packed for protection in transit, ready to be re-hydrated well above the earth's atmosphere.

And, surprisingly, it's not all bland fair. The astronauts are also provided with treats and snacks, including cookies and M&Ms.
