If 2013 was the year of the pouch in Australasia, 2014 is the year of the on-the-go package. Sturdy, re-sealable closures are essential for portability.

This week, even cans became re-sealable here.

Orora Limited has signed an exclusive licence with Xolution in Germany to distribute the XO re-sealable can closure in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific region.

XO allows beverage cans to be re-sealed again and again after the initial opening.

Even as a prototype in 2009, Xolution’s XO resealable can was recognised as a big step forward. It won the Silver Prototype Can of the Year Award in Dubai. Since then, it was been enhanced and refined according to the results of market research and field testing.

XO has everything that consumers have liked for thirty-five years about the conventional SOT (Stay On Tab) system - the most used and most familiar partial opening system for beverage cans. Xolution has removed the SOT’s one flaw. XO re-seals easily and firmly. Carbonated beverages stay carbonated. Fresh drinks stay fresh.

XO reseals perfectly.

The two-step pull incorporates an assurance against tampering. A little transparent band seal has to break the first time the tab is lifted. After the XO tab has been opened, the XO system slides to reveal the can opening and clicks into its open position. It is re-sealed when the slider is returned to its closed position and the tab is pressed to lock it in place.

“The XO re-sealable can end offers our customers significant benefits and opportunities,” Nigel Garrard, managing director and chief executive officer of Orora Limited, stated.

“XO is compatible with most existing filling lines currently on the market, requiring little to no line changes or capital investment, and its slim line design means no change to the amount of liquid in the can.

“Another major benefit is that the XO ends can be customised with different colours and embossed company logos to add brand support.

XO may be used on a wide range of can sizes.

XO in a nutshell:

1. Resealable closure - makes the beverage can completely portable

2. Tamperproof seal

3. Easy to use - intuitive, easy to open and reseal

4. Easy integration for the beverage filler in the existing processes (no major adjustments to the filling line)

5. Easy handling for the can maker (XO reclosable can ends based on standard shells)

6. Improved commercialisation for the beverage brand (unique branding options)

7. Reasonably priced
