The book. It's an old school way to read with its paper pages in a cardboard 'package' and its zero interactivity...

Zero interactivity? That fact is out of date. Penguin Book covers are being used as interactive backgrounds on WeTransfer.

The first series to be shown on the website is Penguin Books’ Street Art Series of novels. These feature covers by artists, ROA, gray318, Nathan Burton, Sickboy and 45rpm.

Following a successful trial in June last year using three of the novels, Penguin and WeTransfer will continue to collaborate on the promotional covers.

In the Street Art series, the covers are photographed as still lives, surrounded by objects which reflect the subject of the books. When users click on the image, they are taken to Penguin's online store.

WeTransfer has 20 million monthly users worldwide so the book covers will help the novels to reach a wide audience. The next series of covers will be premiered on WeTransfer in the second half of 2014.

The titles in the current series include Joshua Ferris’ Then We Came to the End, with a cover designed by 45RPM; Nick Cave’s And the Ass Saw the Angel, designed by ROA; Zoë Heller’s The Believers, with a cover by Sickboy; and Zadie Smith’s Embassy of Cambodia, designed by gray318.

Nalden (Ronald Hans), co-founder & chief marketing officer of WeTransfer, said, "Penguin is a company that we have admired for a long time. They have pioneered timeless design and innovative digital communication to ensure publishing remains relevant to a twenty-first century audience.

“The unique look and feel of the Penguin brand sits neatly within the experience we look to deliver for our users. By showcasing these specially commissioned covers we are not only delivering beautiful imagery but offering huge creative opportunities for the Penguin brand."

WeTransfer has also recently collaborated with the British Fashion Council, experience designer Nelly Ben and Where's Wally?
