Outerspace Design's structural packaging division has opened a New Zealand office to work more closely with its client base in the country and build more opportunities for business growth.

The office is to be headed-up by NZ development manager Bryan Terry, who will be based in St Heliers.

A long serving employee of the company, Terry spent eight years honing his skills in Outerspace's Melbourne studio before moving back to his homeland late last year to establish the new operation.

“What will we be doing when we’re not skydiving, bungy jumping, or analysing whether or not the new Marmite tastes the same as the old?” Terry said.

“Let’s take a brief look at one industry sector: more than 40 major global food and beverage manufacturers have invested in production in New Zealand, and Auckland is the heart of the country’s food processing and wholesaling industry.

“Auckland has a strong cluster of more than 4,800 food and beverage firms employing nearly 40,000 people. This alone provides ample scope for good structural packaging design support in the FMCG sector.”

Outerspace's director of structural packaging, Michael Grima, told PKN the company had long had clients active in the New Zealand market.

“We have had a few clients over the years, but now we can give them more direct service,” Grima said.

“We also have a number of clients here with offices in New Zealand, so we can work more closely with them as well.

“With that as a base, we will soon start knocking on doors to build up our client base there even further.”

Grima said the New Zealand market shared many cultural similarities with the Australian market, but with challenges and opportunities of its own.

“One of the things we like about Kiwis is they are very export focused and have a good global sense of the world,” he said.
