SOTA stands for state of the art. SOTA Packaging aims to bring state of the art composite cans to the Australian market.

It has chosen foodpro as a platform to show food manufacturers the benefits of putting their brands in paperboard. But not just standard composite cans that are already on the market and have been around for decades, almost unmodified.

SOTA wants to move this useful packaging format to the next level, and is promoting its capability in 'non-rounds' – a rectangular shape with rounded corners that offers good brand facing on shelf, storage and logistics efficiencies, barrier properties (provided by inner foil barrier layer) and the environmental benefits of paperboard material. In the case of SOTA's composite cans, 75% of the pack is made of recycled material, and the entire pack is recyclable.

 

“We are the only company in Australia with this capability," says David Kilpatrick, MD of SOTA Packaging, which he founded with partner and general manager Eddy Pahor some four years ago.

The company has installed the linear composite can making equipment at its Perth facility, and is in discussions with brand owners regarding the style of closures required, for which it will then install the required tooling.

“A number of significant brand owners spent time with us and we feel confident that there will be some very positive business possibilities ensuing,” Kilpatrick says.

“With nearly two full days still to go, we are excited that there will be more opportunities to spread the word and to demonstrate the features and benefits of our composite can technology."
