The next interpack, 8-14 May in Dusseldorf, will introduce an event called Components and a congress by Save Food, the global initiative that welcomed its 100th major participant at the end of 2013 – Nestle.

Components?

Anyone whose role in packaging and/or processing is to provide machines and equipment, will want to update what they know about the components that make packing lines work even more efficiently, rapidly and productively. That is exactly what Components intends to show. Like interpack, Components is the showcase for the latest trends and technologies, and an introduction to what the future will hold. Components will be located next door to the main trade fair, at Düsseldorf’s City Hall in the Congress Center South at the Düsseldorf exhibition grounds. 75 companies are taking part and the event is accompanied by a daily lecture forum.

Save Food...

...is an alliance of companies against global food loss and waste. At interpack, the packaging solutions that support and promote this endeavour will get to highlight their advantages. As of November 2013, 100 hundred industrial companies, associations and media – across large stretches of the food value chain – have joined Save Food.

Each year, worldwide, a third of all food is thrown away or lost, while some 842 million people are suffering from hunger at the same time.

“Reducing food loss and waste is an important part of the journey to be able to feed 9.6 billion people by 2050. We are delighted to join the Save Food Initiative as the complex issue of addressing food loss and waste can only be tackled through an holistic and collaborative approach. Nestle is firmly committed to further reducing food loss and waste along the entire production chain from farm to consumers and beyond,” Dr Anne Roulin, global R&D sustainability manager, Nestle confirmed last year.

Interpack 2014 is to host a Save Food Congress on 7 and 8 May, bringing together the world's experts from industry, the political sphere and civil society to discuss food loss and waste. The reasons for food loss and waste differ greatly from one region of the world to the next. In the less developed countries, up to 40% of food spoils before it even reaches the consumer. In western industrialised nations, up to 30% of all food is disposed of unused. Just a quarter of the food currently lost worldwide would be sufficient to feed all the world’s hungry.

Food & Drink Business

The federal government has released the latest round of Industry Growth Program (IGP) recipients, alongside news that the program is going on indefinite hiatus following the 2026 Budget. Several food sector companies were awarded, including A-Culture Holding, Algenie, and VeraSys.

Asahi Group Holdings has appointed Nigel Parsons as CEO of Asahi Europe & International, taking over the role from Dragoș Constantinescu, who will depart at the end of June.

Integrated organic meat producer, Hewitt Foods, has entered into an agreement to acquire family-owned beef company, Nolan Meats, with the transaction expected to be completed in the second half of 2026.
