Counterfeiting has always existed. But with the walls between the world’s marketplaces being torn down so quickly this decade, counterfeiting is now one of its fast growing industries. The enormous volume of products moving from one place to another throughout the world is making the identification and removal of counterfeit goods a challenging task.
According to the World Customs Organisation, 7% of the total world trade is counterfeit, worth an estimated $600 billion a year. The problem may well be even greater. Quantifying the extent of counterfeiting is a difficult task due to disagreement on definitions and also to the fact that no direct measurement of counterfeit trade can be undertaken, since by definition this is an illegal activity.
The International AntiCounterfeiting Coalition noted in 2012 that counterfeiting had grown by more than 10,000% in the past two decades. Its current statistics, just in the US, are shocking:
- Direct and indirect US jobs supported by IP-intensive industries: 55.7 million
- Total value of intellectual property rights-infringing goods seized, originating from China (including Hong Kong): US$1.61 billion
- Total Value of IPR-related seizures: US$1.74 billion
- Approximate annual volume of trade processed by US customs and border protection: US$2 trillion
- Projected value of global trade in counterfeit and pirated goods in 2015: US$1.77 trillion
The expansion of online commerce is providing a fertile environment in which the counterfeit industry is thriving. Websites are quickly becoming the front end or entry point for consumers, businesses and criminal organisations to the international supply chain.
