It calls itself the language of business because it is used by 17,000 businesses across 22 industry sectors to keep their supply chains in tip top shape. GS1 Australia’s SmartMedia service, launched just over a year ago in September 2013, is now being used by Woolworths, Coles, Metcash, Bidvest, NAFDA, Ausfec Limited, FoodTraders, OfficeMax, Staples, Office National, HealthShare NSW, SP Health and other buying organisations to automatically access authenticated product images and related digital content from their suppliers.
GS1 SmartMedia allows manufacturers, retailers and other trading partners to exchange all kinds of multimedia files and digital assets for the production of printed collateral, websites, point-of-sale, mobile apps and general promotional use. It combines access to the four main modules businesses use – intranet, catalogue, planogram and planning.
“GS1 SmartMedia is an ideal solution for receiving product information from our suppliers. It will definitely save us time and effort downloading images, digital assets etc,” Michael Joiner, national shelf management manager, Metcash Food & Grocery, commented.
Metcash has confirmed that it will also use SmartMedia as one of the sources for digital product content for its new digital platform transformation plan to deliver more seamlessly integrated multi-channel shopping.
Woolworths has published its support for accepting SmartMedia product images across all marketing platforms as one of its solutions. And Coles has officially endorsed and integrated SmartMedia to complement its internal digital content management systems.
Many leading FMCG and healthcare suppliers such as Colgate-Palmolive, Mars, Nestlé, Procter & Gamble, Simplot, 3M, Cerebos and Unilever are using SmartMedia as their main solution for the management and sharing of product content and digital assets. One of the benefits these companies have identified is having the option to provide content themselves, via third parties or GS1.
With the increased use SmartMedia comes a greater demand for photography for digital assets, so GS1 Australia has also enhanced its GS1 Photography Service to include 3D and 360 degree photography options and label data collection.
