The Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) is running a new half-day training course on Labelling & Matching the Label with the Package, in conjunction with UPM Rafalatac, on Wednesday the 23rd of July in Victoria. The course presenter will be Dr Carol Lawrence Phd, MAIP.
Labels attract new users. Reassure existing users. Reinforce your branding. Highlight product benefits. How do you select the right type of label to suit the package and carry the product branding from the filling and labelling line right through to the consumer?
The AIP’s half-day training course will give a comprehensive guide to labelling and how to identify the best label options for each style of packaging.
Should you attend? If you’re a packaging technologist, yes. A brand owner, yes. A designer or a process and production manager, yes.
What's in the course? The course will analyse types of adhesives and their properties, to facilitate choosing the right label. It will discuss permanent, removable, repositionable and wash-off adhesives and the chemical composition of adhesives and approvals for use on foods/pharmaceuticals.
It will examine in detail how to combine the right adhesive with each label face to achieve optimum performance, and will use case studies to illustrate the importance of considering all the key attributes of the product being labelled. These include:
Packaging substrate – cardboard, glass, rigid/flexible plastics
Labelling and in-service temperature considerations
Moisture or condensation whilst labelling
Label printing method and the need for the addition of variable information
Sustainable label criteria and waste management
Impact of the label on package recyclability
Compostable labels and tamper-proof labels.
It will also compare self-adhesive labels with shrink sleeve labels, in-mould labels and linerless labels to help you make informed choices and achieve the optimum result for each specific packaging type. Case studies will be presented for labels on a wide range of products: food, beverages, cosmetic & personal care product, pharmaceuticals, industrial chemical & durable products, and home care products.
See label-making at work. The course includes a site visit so that participants may view equipment to accurately measure adhesion, high and low speed release of the label facestock from the release liner, cohesion testing, adhesive coat weight, label face and liner physical properties such as microns/grammage, tear and tensile strength, measurement of whiteness, brightness and opacity of label stocks, infra-red spectrometry to finger print adhesives.
