Food safety and security, anti-counterfeiting, smart packs, and consumer engagement are four of the key trends to be discussed at the Active and Intelligent Packaging Industry Association (AIPIA) Congress in Amsterdam this November.

Speakers will include Larry Logan from Digimarc Corporation, who will explain how to get consumers to scan product packaging.

He believes the pack is "the most salient touchpoint between a brand and customers".

Swedish research institute Acreo willl discuss how to integrate printed hybrid electronics in novel packaging, while Agfa Graphics will explain how to "secure, customise and connect your packaging design".

The AIPIA celebrates the innovations of design houses and packaging manufacturers that make consumers' lives easier.

For example, Water.io (pictured) is a smart solution which can be embedded or clipped on to a standard drinks bottle to remind people to keep hydrated thoughout the day.

The first version, 'Reminder', contains a simple device that blinks, vibrates, or sounds an alarm to alert users it’s time to hydrate.

The smart cap keeps track of when the water bottle is opened or closed to avoid false alarms.

A touch sensor identifies user touch on the cap; a Light Sensor identifies the lightning status of the room; and a closure/package sensor identifies the status of the cap: opened or closed.
