Of course, you’ve noticed it, the corporate world’s shift in focus to corporate responsibility. Your clients are giving back to the countries and the environment on which they depend for raw materials. As are you.

Australia’s role in that shift was applauded on July 15 in Melbourne at the Australian Packaging Covenant (APC) 2014 awards presented to the highest performing Covenant signatories in this reporting year (to March 2014).

While accepting the award on behalf of Chobani, Peter Riedel gave those invited the quote of the evening and the mantra - originally expressed by Chobani's founder - that captures the spirit of the awards: "What we make might not change the world, but how we make it just might."

Peter Bury, APC board member and Peter Riedel, Chobani.

Keynote presenter at the awards event, Allan Ryan of the Hargraves Institute, said for the APC high performers, the award ceremony was a time to reflect on past success but also on your plans for the future.

While past achievements are a good foundation, he reminded his audience, it is more about how good you're going to be tomorrow.

He underlined the importance of collaboration with industry peers, and of learning from the successful innovation of the other award winners. And he reminded all that crucial to successful innovation is good leadership. The leader doesn't have to be the innovator, he noted, but needs to know how to recognise good ideas and find the resources to make it happen.

APC chief executive officer, Stan Moore.

Currently over 900 organisations are signatories to the APC, showing their commitment to reducing the environmental impacts of consumer packaging.

The APC underlined the importance of its recognition of the industry’s efforts: “…innovations in packaging sustainability can also lead to improvements in areas including internal engagement, supply chain management and consumer experience. Award winners have strived to turn business-as-usual on its head, and demonstrated achievements aligned to the strategic innovation principles for a balanced approach to leadership.”
