Gold and Diamond winners in this year's DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation, to be announced later this month, will be given a PIQET life cycle assessment free-of-charge.

The awards, now in their 25th year, are the packaging industry’s longest running, independently judged global packaging awards program honouring packaging materials, processes, technology and service innovations.

The awards are open to brand owners, packaging designers, converters and manufacturers around the world. The criteria for the awards are excellence in innovation, sustainability and waste/cost reduction.

The PIQET (Packaging Impact Quick Evaluation Tool) assessment, created and managed by the Australian-based Sustainable Packaging Alliance, is a computer-based tool that is widely regarded globally as the leading streamlined LCA programs.

It allows packaging technologists and designers the opportunity to understand the environmental impacts of their packaging, considering the entire supply chain, regardless of the materials used or territories where the packaging is manufactured and ultimately used.

Leader of DuPont's award program, Shanna Moore, said the addition of PIQET to the prize pool would underline the importance of considering sustainability in packaging design.

“It's a valuable contribution and positive collaboration to allow the winners the opportunity to understand their packaging’s sustainability in more depth by using a well-respected global tool such as PIQET,” she said.

The winners will be announced on 16 May at a function in Delaware, USA.
