The flexibles division of Australian packaging giant Amcor has unveiled a new cellulose-based packaging film, Packpyrus, which it says is particularly suited for delicatessen products.

The Packpyrus film is a thermo-formable cellulose-based packaging solution for the fresh market. The company says the film's oxygen barrier makes it particularly suitable for pre-sliced products like meat or cheese.

Amcor will market the Packpyrus product to converters in three versions: Packpyrus Flexible for vacuum pack base webs; Packpyrus Semi-Rigid; and Packpyrus Rigid for modified atmosphere base webs.

It said the Packpyrus Flexible and Packpyrus Rigid solutions set themselves apart from competing films by offering significant improvement in life cycle performance.

“Thanks to their lightness, use of renewable fibres and optimised manufacturing processes they offer an impressive reduction in the cradle-to-gate carbon footprint of about 70 per cent for Packpyrus Flexible and 60 per cent for Packpyrus Rigid,” the company said.

“As a global packaging leader, Amcor believes in responsible packaging and is committed to reducing environmental impacts of all our operations and throughout our products' total life cycles.”

In addition to its environmental credentials, Amcor said it expects the Packpyrus product will also creating marketing interest in the packaging world due to its “Kraft paper” natural look and feel, which it said will bring enhanced product differentiation on shelf.
