Sydney-based lidding specialist Cormack Packaging has added a new cap family to its product line as it looks to lift its profile in the local bulk water market.

Using technology developed by US company Blackhawk Molding, Cormack is hoping the SafeGard cap line, as well as a line of PET preforms for bulk water transport, will help it carve a niche in the growing bulk water supply market in Australia.

Blackhawk Molding, based in Illinois, specialises in inventing and manufacturing proprietary products including plastic injection moulded systems for the dairy, bottled water and juice industries.

It was one of the first suppliers of injection moulded caps when blow moulding of bottles was first introduced to the beverage industry. Since the late 1980s, it has built a profile in the US bottled water industry by developing, patenting, manufacturing and selling its SafeGard line of no-spill caps. It has since developed a full line of caps for the bottled water industry, and become one of the dominant suppliers for the US bulk water market.

The company also makes capping equipment, de-capping equipment, and bottle handling tools. Under the new co-operative arrangement between Cormack and Blackhawk, the Australian company will now offer local bulk water suppliers Blackhawk’s traditional cap with a foam liner option. Cormack says one of the big selling points is that the caps – available in a range of colours – can be custom-labelled to help lift brand recognition and marketing.

Also on offer will be the latest developments out of the Blackhawk labs, the company’s SafeGard caps.

The SafeGard caps are designed to eliminate spilling when the bottle is placed on the cooler. The inner cap opens smoothly and reseals securely when the bottle is removed from the cooler.

“Our premium cap option is Blackhawk’s latest patented innovation with a custom non-adhesive Kleen-Peel label that eliminates plastic from the top of the cap, and provides TE functionality,” Cormack says.

“This liner-label combo also makes the use of bottles in cooler systems an absolute breeze.”
Also, in a nod to overseas trends away from polycarbonate bottles, Cormack has announced it is now offering a range of PET preforms for bulk water.

“Following overseas trends, the market is moving away from polycarbonate bottles to one-way PET bottles,” it says.

The new preforms will be made available in 300g and 330g weights.
