Henkel Adhesive Technologies is expanding its portfolio of water-based barrier and heat seal coatings for paper-based packaging, aimed at improving functionality while supporting recycling compatibility.
The coatings are designed for food and non-food applications and form part of what the company says is a push to strengthen ‘design for recycling’ approaches in paper packaging. They are repulpable, compatible with recycling systems, and approved for food contact in accordance with FDA and EU regulations.
The heat seal coatings are intended to provide sealing performance on paper for formats that require seams, including bags, sachets, and shipping packaging for small items such as screws and toys, as well as dry food and hygiene products.
According to Henkel, the coatings enable heat seals that form a bond through thermal conjunction on suitable paper substrates. The products are designed to work at low temperatures and high line speeds. A UV tracer version is also available to support application monitoring and quality management.
Henkel is also expanding its barrier coatings portfolio for paper-based packaging. These coatings are designed to provide resistance to grease, water, and moisture, while also enabling heat sealing.
The company says the barrier coatings can be used in both primary and secondary packaging and can be integrated into standard coating and packaging processes. Like the heat seal coatings, they are repulpable and compatible with recycling systems.
Dr Arianna Savini, market strategy manager paper packaging Europe at Henkel Adhesive Technologies, said, “With our expanded paper coatings portfolio, we enable paper-based packaging that is ready for current market demands. By providing the necessary barrier and sealing properties for numerous applications in the food and non-food sectors, we are not only supporting the shift towards recyclable packaging solutions but also helping customers to achieve their sustainability targets within the scope of the PPWR."
