Packaging films producer Innovia has responded to demand for high-speed materials with the launch of a new coextruded material.

The high-speed Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) film, Propafilm REF, has been designed with speed in mind, according to Innovia.

The product presents a wide sealing range when compared to standard coextruded films, and provides an enhanced hot tack performance over standard films.

This means that the seals, when pulled still hot, resist opening on a larger range of temperatures. Combined, these two properties make Propafilm REF suitable to horizontal-form-fill wrapping applications.

Innovia has validated its laboratory findings with actual packaging machinery trials, such as with SPS Italiana Pack systems.

It ran PropafilmREF on its Modulo machine and confirmed that speeds of 80m/min were achieved, a substantial 30 m/min improvement.

"At these speeds, the film was still passing our stringent micro-hole acceptance level (200 mbar/20 sec. pillow bag configuration), SPS project manager Roberto Spatolisano said.

The film is suited to a variety of applications and markets such as biscuits and bakery, confectionery, dried foods, tea and cosmetics.
