Amcor and Chinese pet food brand Ge Wu An have launched the Li Kou pet food cup, which uses a bottom seal to allow the meal to be released from the packaging in one piece.

The packaging combines a polypropylene cup body with a top lidding film and bottom seal film. To serve the food, pet owners peel, invert, tear and lift the cup, avoiding the need to scrape or scoop food from the container.

The format was developed to address issues associated with traditional wet pet food cans, including broken pull rings, sharp edges and food residue. According to Amcor, the cup-and-film structure also uses less material per unit than traditional aluminium cans and reduces product weight during transport.

“The development of this new product was driven by real pain points that pet owners face every day,” said Liu Mengru, brand lead at Ge Wu An.

The Li Kou cup was developed through Amcor’s Catalyst innovation platform, which brought the two companies together during the early stages of development. The teams worked on the packaging for more than a year before its commercial launch.

“Through Catalyst, we work alongside customers from the earliest stages of development to turn ideas into commercially viable packaging solutions,” said Jessica Chen, marketing and product management director, Amcor Flexibles China.
