AWA Alexander Watson Associates has strengthened its position in the fast-growing smart packaging sector with the acquisition of AIPIA, the Active & Intelligent Packaging Industry Association.
The deal marks the expansion of AWA’s market intelligence and advisory capabilities, bringing AIPIA’s global network, events and deep industry expertise under the AWA umbrella. It also signals a strategic alignment at a time when connected packaging, digital engagement and intelligent labelling technologies are reshaping how brands communicate, protect products and advance sustainability goals.
Founded in 2011, AIPIA has been a leading voice in promoting the adoption of active and intelligent packaging technologies, driving collaboration between technology suppliers, packaging converters, brand owners and retailers. Its annual congress and industry partnerships have helped place smart packaging firmly on the global innovation agenda.
AWA president and CEO Corey Reardon said the acquisition underscores the company’s commitment to supporting the industry’s shift toward data-driven, tech-enabled packaging solutions.
“We are excited to welcome AIPIA into the AWA family,” Reardon said. “The active and intelligent packaging sector is at the forefront of technological advancement, and this acquisition reflects our commitment to providing our clients with unparalleled access to the latest information, trends and insights. With AIPIA’s extensive network and know-how, we are set to lead the way in guiding the future as an information source to the packaging and labeling industry.”
The move will see the two organisations deepen their collaboration on market analysis, business intelligence and event delivery, including further development of the AIPIA & AWA Global Congress. AWA says combining its analytical strength with AIPIA’s specialist focus will deliver expanded value for stakeholders across the packaging value chain.
AIPIA managing director Eef de Ferrante described the acquisition as a natural next step for the association.
“Joining forces with AWA presents an exciting opportunity for AIPIA,” de Ferrante said. “Together, we are poised to elevate our impact in the active and intelligent packaging domain, delivering exceptional value as an information and networking hub.”
With the market for smart, connected and intelligent packaging growing rapidly – driven by consumer engagement, supply-chain transparency and sustainability requirements – the combined entity positions itself as a leading global authority in this accelerating space.
