During Pack Expo International in Chicago, World Packaging Organisation president Pierre Pienaar was inducted into the Hall of Fame Class of 2022.

Since 1971, the Packaging & Processing Hall of Fame has recognised career packaging and processing professionals for their significant contributions to the industry and education.

“Pierre Pienaar has become one of the most prolific and recognisable packaging educators in the world,” according to the Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies (PMMI).

“President of the World Packaging Organisation, his passion is educating the world about packaging, the science of packaging, and the need to properly recycle.

“In addition to running a packaging consultancy in Australia, Pienaar lectures students in Food Innovation and Packaging at universities around the world.”

The PKN Podcast spoke to Pierre Pienaar ahead of PackExpo, where he shared his response to the award and an update on WPO activities.

The Hall of Fame welcomes new members every year, who are chosen by the Hall of Fame Commission, which selects inductees from individuals who have been nominated.

The Commission includes a cross-section of industry professionals including suppliers, end-users and journalists.

This year’s honourees also included the late Jean-Jacques Graffin, founder of Serac; Rebecca Oesterle, chair of the board of directors at the Institute of Packaging Professionals; and E. Jeffrey Rhodehamel, professor of food, nutrition and packaging sciences at Clemson University.
