ThePackHub is inviting emerging packaging businesses worldwide to enter the Packaging Startup Awards 2027, with submissions opening on 1 September.

The global awards programme recognises packaging start-ups developing innovations in sustainability, functionality and design.

Entries will be accepted across five categories: Alternative Materials, Connected Packaging, Increased Functionality, Refill & Reuse, and Waste Reduction. Innovations spanning more than one area may be entered in multiple categories.

The Alternative Materials category covers developments such as biomaterials, compostable or biodegradable packaging and material switches. Connected Packaging encompasses smart packaging, augmented reality, NFC, RFID, smart barcodes and anti-counterfeiting technologies.

Increased Functionality includes innovations in resealability, portability, opening, dispensing and dosage control, while Refill & Reuse covers reusable and refillable packaging, cleaning systems, tracking and consumer engagement. Waste Reduction recognises developments addressing food waste, shelf life, recyclability, recycled content and material reduction.

The awards are free to enter and open to privately owned packaging start-ups that are not listed on a stock exchange or subsidiaries of another company. Eligible businesses must have been operating for fewer than five years and have developed or introduced a packaging innovation or significant improvement. Full eligibility requirements are available in the awards terms and conditions.

Entries will be assessed by a panel drawn from packaging, retail, FMCG and investment organisations, including Premier Foods, PZ Cussons, Marks & Spencer, Tesco, Easyfairs, Lavazza Professional, Ocado and ThePackHub.

ThePackHub says participation can provide industry exposure and feedback, while helping start-ups demonstrate the potential of their technology or business model to prospective customers and investors.

Winners will be announced live at Packaging Innovations & Empack at the NEC Birmingham on 25 February 2027. Entries open on 1 September 2026.

Food & Drink Business

Inghams has returned to volume growth with reduced dependence on Woolworths but net profit fell 61.5 per cent to $34.6 million as input cost inflation, first half production inefficiencies and a tax provision weighed on FY26 earnings.

Endeavour Group’s decision to reset shelf prices at Dan Murphy’s has restored sales momentum but taken a heavy toll on earnings, with annual profit down 87.8 per cent to $52 million for FY26 after $372 million in pre-tax significant items covering restructuring, asset writedowns and the exit from its winery portfolio.

Food and beverage businesses that delay adopting AI, precision agriculture, digital modelling and fermentation technologies risk being locked out of the commercial opportunities attached to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, a new perspective paper from Australia’s Food and Beverage Accelerator (FaBA) says.
