The Active & Intelligent Packaging Industry Association (AIPIA) Smart Packaging Virtual Congress takes place this week, on Thursday 10 September.

This year, due to Covid-19 restrictions, the congress is being held online. This presents an opportunity for those of us in Australasia to attend this event that covers the cutting edge of packaging technology without having to travel to Europe.

The AIPIA said the Congress is the most important place for networking and information exchange in the world of smart packaging.

“No other event allows delegates to see the big picture and meet so many brands. This will continue in the virtual event, so we come back even stronger, physically, in Amsterdam, 2021,” the association said in a statement.

Some highlights for the congress include a talk on the benefits of connected packaging by Claudius Jaeger, director of European sales at Digimarc. He is to speak on the various retail and consumer brand benefits of adding an imperceptible, repeating digital identity to packaging.

Also, there will be a panel discussion on near-field communication, or NFC, technology. It will include leaders from Mastercard, PragmatIC, Smartrac, TapWow and Blue Bite. NFC technology has become one of the most prolific technologies on the planet with more than 20 per cent of the population having access to it. During the discussion, attendees will hear about examples of NFC applied to smart packaging.

AIPIA chairman Dick de Koning said the association’s advisory board were clear that the annual congress must happen in a way that allows it to continue helping shape the future direction of the industry.

“AIPIA is integral to the future success of the smart packaging sector and l urge you to give it your full and absolute support in 2020. The Virtual Congress must come first in your agenda.”

AIPIA managing director Eef de Ferrante said this is a challenging time but an exciting one.

“Many events have been cancelled or postponed and others are going to take the virtual route, so it will get crowded. But l assure you, AIPIA Virtual Congress will be the best on offer for smart packaging practitioners and users,” de Ferrante said.

“And, it has the potential to reach a bigger on-line audience than ever, to add even more value for speakers, exhibitors and delegates. So, making the choice on where to spend your budget is simple, we hope.”
