The 2025 Food Packaging Design Award recognises organisations that have designed innovative packaging materials, packaging within food packaging including fresh, frozen or other.

And the winners are...

Two High Commendations were awarded to Gippsland Dairy Crafted Range 150g by Chobani; and KFC Go Bucket Paper Lid by KFC Australia and Detpak.

The Bronze award went to Opal's paper-based food and fresh produce punnet; while the Silver award went to Australian Organic Food Co. Vanilla Custard Mono Material Retort Pouch by Flavour Makers and Cheer Pack Asia Pacific.

And, topping the category with the Gold award, was Macro Health Food Box-Bottom Paper Bags by Woolworths Food Co.

About the Gold winner:

Macro, a Woolworths brand offering high-quality foods, is committed to sustainable packaging solutions that align with consumer expectations for reduced plastic and recyclability. Its innovative response is the introduction of a flat box-bottom stand up paper bag for dried fruits and nuts, which is a first in the Australian market.

Macro's shift to paper-based packaging delivers significant benefits for both consumers and the environment, including replacing existing soft plastic packaging with a kerbside recyclable paper-based alternative, incorporating advanced barrier technology for product freshness.

Kerbside recyclability of the box-bottom paper bags allows for easy disposal at home. Consumers can simply place the pack in their kerbside recycling bin without needing to make a special trip to a drop-off point.

The design also offers advanced barrier technology ensuring product freshness and protection, without compromising on quality.

The flat box-bottom stand up bag format optimises shelf presentation and transport efficiency. This efficient design helps to reduce waste and transportation costs.

The transition to paper results in an 86 per cent reduction in plastic usage, saving 96 tonnes of plastic annually across 12 million packs.

By prioritising both functionality and environmental responsibility, Macro are setting a positive example for industry.

Food & Drink Business

As consumers lean towards functional food and beverages, the sports and energy drink market is leading the charge. Market research company, IMARC Group, has released its Australia Sports and Energy Drinks Market report for 2024, outlining current trends and expected growth over the next decade.

The International Fresh Produce Association (IFPA) ANZ Produce Executive Program (PEP), a leadership and business development program for the fresh produce industry, will make its New Zealand debut from 17-22 August.

Thomas Foods International has moved from two shifts to one extended single shift at its Lobethal processing facility, due to drought and lower livestock supply. The company said it was a “difficult but necessary decision”, given current market conditions.
