Pac Food says its lined sugarcane trays have received approval for classification as ‘Recyclable’ under the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) Program, provided all other applicable recyclability thresholds are met.

The company reports that, following assessment by the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO), the trays meet recyclability criteria with their plastic linings still attached.

The range is made from virgin sugarcane pulp and is available with CPET, CPET/EVOH and PP/EVOH linings. It serves food manufacturers, caterers, meal preparation businesses and other commercial food operations.

According to Pac Food, the assessment means the trays can enter the recycling stream without consumers first separating the lining from the fibre component, subject to applicable recycling guidance and the conditions of the ARL classification.

The ARL Program provides on-pack instructions to help consumers identify how to dispose of packaging components.

Pac Food also identifies composting as a potential alternative for the sugarcane fibre component once the lining has been removed. This pathway requires separation of the materials, while the reported recyclability assessment applies to the lined tray.
