ExxonMobil Signature Polymers and LD Pack have developed a mono-PE frozen food packaging solution designed as a recyclable alternative to conventional multi-material laminates.
The packaging uses an MDO PE//PE structure built with Exceed Stiff+, Exxtra Seal and Exceed HD polymers, combined with LD Pack's converting technology. It is intended to replace traditional BOPET//PE laminate structures, which can be difficult to recycle because they use multiple materials.
According to the company, demand for frozen foods and interest in recyclable packaging have increased the focus on mono-material packaging that maintains mechanical performance.
In testing against a reference BOPET//PE laminate, the mono-PE structure achieved 100 per cent bag drop survival after frozen conditioning at -30°C from a three-metre drop height. The company says the packaging also delivered higher needle puncture resistance and improved low-temperature tensile strength.
The film is designed to provide balanced stiffness for shelf appeal while maintaining package integrity during freezing, storage and transportation.
ExxonMobil says the development was carried out through its ExxonMobil Signature Polymers portfolio, which brings together the company's polyolefin products under a single brand.
