MM Packaging Deeside, UK, has introduced a double-rim structure for its GreenPeel fibre-based food tray, designed for fresh protein applications including meat and fish.

The new structure replaces the previous single rim with a continuous double rim around the tray. The company said the design was developed in response to customer demand and provides additional robustness for skin-sealed products, helping maintain seal integrity through storage, distribution and retail.

MM Packaging modified its machinery and tooling to produce the updated tray, which is currently available for protein applications. Wider implementation across the GreenPeel range is planned.

GreenPeel uses a cartonboard construction with a removable liner and up to 90 per cent less plastic than conventional plastic trays, according to MM Packaging. The range is also designed for applications including chilled meals and fresh produce.

Jonathan Craddock, UK business development manager for GreenPeel at MM Packaging Deeside, said the double-rim structure was developed to provide a stronger tray while maintaining the existing packaging format's sustainability and branding benefits.

“Customers want a stronger, more robust solution capable of maintaining a reliable skin seal throughout storage, distribution and retail display,” he said.

Dave Whitworth, managing director at MM Packaging Deeside, said the company developed the enhancement in response to market requirements.

“We're helping food manufacturers make meaningful progress towards their sustainability objectives without sacrificing quality or functionality,” he said.
