Caps & Closures' Honey Squeeze Pack took three honours at the 2026 Packaging Innovation & Design Awards (PIDA), including gold for Design for Recovery.

Gold: Design for Recovery: the rPET bottle, rPP closure and recyclable rPE valve form a recyclable pack system.

The Honey Squeeze Pack also received silver for Accessible & Inclusive Packaging Design and bronze for Food Packaging Design at the awards, presented on 28 July at The Aviary in Melbourne's Crown Complex.

According to Caps & Closures, the pack was designed to reduce product waste by allowing honey to dispense more completely from the bottle. It comprises a clear rPET bottle that stands on its cap, an rPP flip-top cap and an rPE dispensing valve that replaces the silicone valves commonly used in honey squeeze packs.

Silver: One-handed use: the inverted, one-handed squeeze format makes honey easier to serve.

"The valve in this pack is polyethylene, and it is recyclable, which is what lets us describe the whole pack as recyclable rather than most of the pack. Bottle, cap, valve, each with somewhere to go at the end," said Brendon Holmes, MD of Caps & Closures.

According to the company, the bottle, cap and valve can each be specified with up to 100 per cent post-consumer recycled content. It has also completed an Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) PREP assessment on the unbranded pack, providing a starting point for brand owners when applying their own labels.

Caps & Closures said the pack underwent in-house testing, including repeated opening and closing, leak testing, dispensing performance and emptying performance.

Although the Honey Squeeze Pack was entered in two categories, it also received silver in the Accessible & Inclusive Packaging Design special category announced on the night.

Bronze: Cleaner Dispensing: supports a smooth, controlled drizzle with fewer drips and a clean cut-off.

"We designed it to dispense honey cleanly, and it turned out that a pack you can open, squeeze and close with one hand is a pack that suits somebody with a weak grip, or somebody holding a child, or anybody whose other hand is busy.

"The judges saw that before we had thought to say it, and we are grateful to them and to the AIP for looking that closely," Holmes said.

The company said the PIDA recognition also provides eligibility to enter the WorldStar Global Packaging Awards next year.

Representing Caps & Closures at the awards ceremony (l-r) were Adam Waldron, Bruce Langlands, Lachlan Holmes and Brendon Holmes.
