The 2017 Design Innovation of the Year Award, in the Health, Beauty and Wellness category, was awarded to two companies in the areas of Materials and Packaging and Machinery and Equipment.

Nestlé Health Science Australia and qDesign Enterprises were recognised for the Nestlé Health Science Resource ThickenUp Hydration range with Innovative Sipper Lid.

The range was designed to improve patient care and Nestlé engaged Arthritis Australia to help with the concept and packaging.

In the machinery and equipment category, HMPS was recognised for the HMPS 6000 End Load Cartoner.

The flexible packaging machine can package personal care products of different sizes, varying shapes and weights into a variety of case sizes in various configurations at high speed.

It has been designed to pack product into the erected cartons in the correct orientation and carton format.

Products are horizontally packed into the erected carton by multiple pushers, and loaded cartons are automatically glued before exiting the machine.

What made the design unique is the clever balance between size, weight, energy saving and the high level of flexibility required.

The design is based on continuous motion to achieve the high throughput requirements of 50 cases per minute.

FOODiQ Global has completed a 28-year analysis of Australian non-alcoholic drink sales, revealing a strong swing towards water and low- and no-sugar carbonated drinks for consumer choices in the beverage aisle. The study was commissioned by the Australian Beverages Council.
