A new closure which makes it easier to take caps and lids off products has been released by Crown.

The global closures supplier is working with Jet Technologies in Australia, who introduced the technology at Auspack this month:

The Orbit Closure Ezy Grip enables the elderly and arthritis sufferers to open caps and lids more easily with the help of an orbit ring which breaks the seal.

Plastic milk bottles, clamshell packs, cans, cartons, flow-wrapped goods, childproof bottles, and jars are among the most difficult-to-open products for consumers over 65.

The number of over-60s globally is projected to rise by 50 per cent in the next 25 years.

To open jars fitted with the Orbit lid, users simply twist the ring in the same way as a normal twist-off lid.

However, it comes in two parts: a central panel, which is sealed to the jar by vacuum, and an outer ring, which is screwed in place to provide further protection.

When the user twists the ring, firstly it loosens the ring and secondly it smoothly pushes the panel away from the jar to break the seal.
