The Australasian Institute of Packaging (AIP) will host a State of Industry webinar on 7 October focused on the current and future state of soft plastics and flexible packaging recovery in Australia and New Zealand.

The webinar will examine challenges around the collection and mechanical recycling of soft plastics and flexible packaging, as well as recent recovery projects and collection programmes across the region.

The panel will discuss projects including Australia Post’s onshore circular satchel, made at iQRenew’s SPEC facility, a proof-of-concept KitKat wrapper made using soft plastics pyrolysis oil developed by Viva Energy, and supermarket collection programmes across Australia and New Zealand.

The role of Soft Plastics Stewardship Australia (SPSA) in bringing the industry together will also be discussed.

Panellists will include Faina Kerr, circular innovation partner, group sustainability office at Australia Post; Danial Gallagher, managing director at iQRenew; Craig Miller, chief executive officer at The Packaging Forum NZ; Vanessa Lenihan, head of future fuels & decarbonisation at Viva Energy; Barry Cosier, chief executive officer at Soft Plastics Stewardship Australia; and Lyn Mayes KSM, soft plastic recycling scheme manager.

The AIP said the industry needs to work across the value chain to support investment in soft plastics recovery and ensure end markets are viable for the long term.

Food and beverage manufacturers are facing a warehouse space crisis, and most of them did not see it coming. Production expanded, storage followed and over time, an organised operation became a fragmented footprint of disconnected warehouses, rising third-party costs, and a site nobody would have designed on purpose. Swisslog ANZ director of sales, Steve Dimitrovski, examines why the space problem is structural and how automation is helping manufacturers solve it without building a new site.

NSW Food and Beverage manufacturers are invited to join an upcoming information session at the Advanced Manufacturing Readiness Facility (AMRF) to learn about funding and support available to help businesses innovate, grow and improve competitiveness.
