Carlton & United Breweries has unveiled a special edition can which pays tribute to the brand’s first-ever steel can used in Australia in 1958.

The retro-style can features the traditional green, white, gold, and red colours, and has begun popping up on shelves in Victoria.

A CUB spokeswoman confirmed the can would be available on shelves for the next two months, and the taste had not changed.

“VB released the beer in a steel can back then to help keep the beer colder,” the spokesperson told 9NEWS.

First brewed in 1854, Victoria Bitter's brewer CUB is now a subsidiary of alcohol industry giant SABMiller.

After decades of market dominance, in recent years VB has jostled with Lion Nathan’s XXXX Gold as the country’s most popular beer by volume.
