Private label coffee roasting company, Espressology, turned to Trimatt Systems to boost its ability to deliver quick and high-quality printing of short-run, short-turnaround coffee bags.

In the dynamic realm of process automation machinery and digital printing, Trimatt Systems has secured its standing, as the recipient of the 2022 APPMA Machinery Manufacturer Award – SME, and has emerged as a trailblazer in transforming how businesses approach custom packaging.

At the core of this transformative journey is the ColourStar AQ V, a pioneering digital print system that has garnered acclaim for its capabilities, recently earning Trimatt a finalist place in the 2024 APPMA Awards of Excellence.

Ged Ryan, chief operating officer at Sydney-based Espressology, attests to the “game-changing” impact of Trimatt’s technology. He says that in a matter of seconds he recognised how Trimatt could “supercharge” the private label roasting company. The pivotal moment came in mid-2023 when Ryan stumbled upon an email from Trimatt, prompting further exploration into the Melbourne-based packaging company.

Ryan notes a longstanding challenge in the coffee industry is the quick and high-quality printing of short-run, short-turnaround coffee bags. Trimatt’s email, supported by a video showcasing its ColourStar AQ printing machine in action, provided a solution that addressed Espressology’s specific needs, including the incorporation of valves, a persistent issue in the coffee packaging process.

Impressed by Trimatt’s capabilities, Ryan visited its facilities, establishing a strong relationship and confirming that Trimatt’s Australian base and in-house manufacturing were pivotal factors in the decision-making process.

“We don’t buy machines unless we meet the people behind them, and [Trimatt] had a good feel to them,” he says.

“The fact they are Australian-based [is important] – in our industry [if you buy from overseas businesses], there’s no local support. All machines break down occasionally, so being local was important to us – and the fact they built machine themselves was even better.”

Matt Johnson, Trimatt Systems director, started the company in 2005, and says the relationship with Espressology is a prime example of Trimatt’s ability to solve clients’ problems.

“The main problem we solve [with clients in the coffee industry] is the long lead times that customers face when they want to order personal branding of their products,” he says.

“We take great pride in helping businesses come up with a better way to do things. For example, the ColourStar AQ gives Ged and his company the reach and capacity to meet what their clients need – that’s what we’re all about, coming up with solutions that fill a particular void that clients have.”

The ColourStar AQ, with its automated features and print quality, became the ideal fit for Espressology’s requirements, enabling the company to print short-run, customised coffee bags, packaging cartons, and takeaway bags with what it says is unparalleled efficiency.

The ColourStar AQ’s success is underscored by its recognition in the industry, winning the 2023 Product Innovation Award for Coffee Accessories at the Melbourne International Coffee Expo.

Trimatt’s commitment to continuous innovation will be showcased at the upcoming APPEX expo (stand F045) where it will debut the Trimatt ColourStar AQ BoxPro, an ultra-wide CMYK digital print solution designed specifically for boxes and shippers. This new model promises to optimise storage space by allowing on-demand SKU printing, catering to the evolving needs of manufacturers looking to enhance operational efficiency and reduce warehouse costs.

Beyond the ColourStar AQ series, Trimatt Systems will also demonstrate other models tailored for general food packaging, feeding and coding inkjet solutions for FMCG, and the high-speed folding and gluing capabilities of the Trimatt FoldLine 9000.

Trimatt says its innovative printing systems go beyond saving time and resources; they contribute to enhanced productivity, ultimately resulting in improved return on investment for businesses. It says the ColourStar AQ V, with its customisable features and industrial-grade performance, facilitates fast, economical, and profitable in-house package printing.
