Labelmakers Group has secured an Australian patent for its Intermittent Glue Linerless (IGL) technology, a label application innovation designed to improve production line performance while reducing material waste.

The technology, which has been in use by customers since 2023, has now been granted Australian patent No. 2024202751, recognising Labelmakers’ development of a system that applies adhesive only in targeted areas of a linerless label.

By depositing adhesive strips precisely where required, the system aims to minimise adhesive build-up on machinery, reduce cleaning downtime, and improve label cutting accuracy during application. The targeted adhesive approach is also designed to support smoother operation across automated packaging lines.

According to Labelmakers, the innovation also delivers sustainability benefits by reducing adhesive consumption and eliminating the release liner typically associated with pressure-sensitive labels.

Linerless labels have gained increasing interest across the packaging and logistics sectors due to their material efficiency and waste reduction potential. Technologies such as IGL aim to address some of the operational challenges associated with linerless application, particularly adhesive management on high-speed lines.

The patent announcement comes shortly after Labelmakers confirmed it had acquired flexible packaging machinery assets from Perfection Packaging at its Dandenong South facility in Victoria, strengthening its production footprint and technical capability in the Australian packaging market.

Together, the developments signal continued investment by the Melbourne-based converter in both manufacturing capability and proprietary technology as it expands its offerings across labels and flexible packaging.
