In a major boost for the fledgling paper bottle market, UK-based packaging technology company Pulpex has opened its first commercial fibre bottle manufacturing facility near Glasgow, Scotland, with an initial production capacity of up to 40 million bottles a year.
The facility is expected to create approximately 39 manufacturing jobs and serves as a model for the company's planned global Manufacture Under Licence network, which aims to reach annual production of one billion units.
Made from sustainably sourced wood pulp, Pulpex's bottles are designed to be free from hidden plastic and recyclable through existing household paper and cardboard recycling streams.
The company says the bottles are compatible with existing filling infrastructure, allowing brands to adopt the packaging format without costly production-line modifications. The bottles use commodity pulp sourced through established global markets.
The development was supported by investment from the UK's National Wealth Fund and the Scottish National Investment Bank.
“The opening of our Glasgow facility marks the moment Pulpex moves from proving the technology to proving the industrial model,” said Sandy Westwater, chief executive officer at Pulpex.
“We have developed and industrialised a breakthrough packaging technology in the United Kingdom, and Glasgow is where partners and brand owners can now see it running.”
Pulpex said more than 90 per cent of the facility's initial available capacity for the current financial year had been sold before opening, with customers across food-grade and non-food categories.
Purely Scottish Natural Mineral Water is among the first brands expected to take commercial volumes from the site. Following an 18-month collaboration with Pulpex, the brand plans to introduce what the company describes as the UK's first natural mineral water in a paper bottle.
Household cleaning brand smol is also introducing Pulpex fibre bottles for liquid laundry products, offering an alternative to conventional plastic packaging.
Pulpex is expanding through manufacturing partnerships. In Europe, Swiss paper and packaging group Perlen Industrieholding became its first Manufacture Under Licence partner, with manufacturing exclusivity across Switzerland, Austria, Italy and southern Germany. The company has already brought its PerlenBottle to market.
In India, Pulpex has granted rigid packaging manufacturer Alternicq exclusive rights to develop the market across India and the Gulf Cooperation Council, ahead of a full Manufacture Under Licence agreement.
The Glasgow facility will support commercial launches and scaled trials as Pulpex develops its international manufacturing network.
“With an initial capacity of 40 million units a year, Glasgow is the first step on our path to one billion units globally,” said Scott Winston, managing director and chief science and sustainability officer at Pulpex.
“It is exactly the kind of innovation-led manufacturing the UK's Industrial Strategy champions: high-value UK intellectual property, advanced production, skilled jobs in Scotland, and a practical solution for a lower-carbon economy.”
