Orora has applied to EPA Victoria for a development licence to install the second aluminium beverage can manufacturing line at its Dandenong South facility, which it is building in order to meet rising demand.

The new multi-size canning line is projected to be in operation by June. The company expects growing cans volumes in Australia to be one of its key revenue drivers in the next financial year.

Cans were the standout Australian performer for Orora in the first half of the financial year. The new line at Dandenong will add ten per cent to the company's capacity. A new canning line is now also being planned for its Revesby site in NSW.

Brian Lowe, CEO of Orora told investors in the release of the half year figures last week, “Our Australasian business continues to deliver reliable and resilient earnings. An increase in revenue was supported by cans volume growth." By contrast Orora's wine and beer bottle business suffered a dip.

Orora currently operates under an existing licence at Gate 1, 100 South Gippsland Highway, Dandenong South.

The aluminium can manufacturer produces its beverage cans on a conveying system, where aluminium coil is mechanically and chemically treated, before it is then cured to solidify the can shape. Cans are then decorated, palletised and shipped to customer plants.

EPA Victoria invites community to comment on the application from 21 February to 14 March. The full application can be viewed here.
