Australian beverage company Famous Soda Co is stirring up the children’s nutrition category with its new Famous Kids Protein Shake, packaged in sustainable Tetra Brik Aseptic 250 Edge cartons by Tetra Pak – a collaboration that combines convenience, nutrition and environmental responsibility.

Founded by Julie and Michael Pillon, Famous Soda Co as grown into a leading brand in the 'better for you' beverage space, available in all major Australian supermarkets and exported to over 14 countries. The duo's commitment to flavour, health, and sustainability has established Famous Soda Co as a household name and a key player in transforming the way people think about sugar globally.

The format, in 250ml portion size, aligns with recommended dietary intake for children, while ensuring portability and ease of use.

The family-run business expanded into functional beverages in late 2024 with the launch of the Famous Kids Protein Shake, designed for children aged one to eleven and created to provide parents with a nutritious, on-the-go option that meets modern expectations for both health and convenience.

Available in chocolate and strawberry flavours, the shake claims to deliver 10 grams of Australian whey protein along with calcium, magnesium, vitamin C and vitamin B6. Further claims include no added sugar or preservatives, and a 5-star health rating.

Packaging partner

When developing the Kids Protein Shake, Famous Soda Co identified a gap in the market for nutritious, grab-and-go beverages for children. To bring the concept to life, the company turned to Tetra Pak for a packaging solution that would meet its dual goals of functionality and sustainability.

After consultation and testing, the Tetra Brik Aseptic 250 Edge carton was chosen. The format offered the ideal 250ml portion size, aligning with recommended dietary intake for children, while ensuring portability and ease of use. The sloping top and resealable cap make the carton practical for small hands and lunchboxes, delivering a spill-free experience for children and peace of mind for parents.

Tetra Pak worked closely with Famous Soda Co through each stage, from connecting co-packers and refining the packaging design to ensuring a smooth product rollout and rapid time-to-market.

Sustainable by design

Sustainability was a critical factor in the packaging decision. The Tetra Brik Aseptic 250 Edge carton is made primarily from renewable materials and claims to offer a significantly lower carbon footprint* compared to single-use glass, PET or even reusable glass bottles – at only 83g CO₂e per litre.

Tetra Pak says the aseptic technology eliminates the need for refrigeration or preservatives, extending shelf life while maintaining nutritional integrity. This not only reduces food waste but also supports efficient distribution across domestic and export markets.

The carton’s lightweight, space-efficient design further contributes to reduced emissions during transport, aligning with both companies’ shared goal of minimising environmental impact.

Market impact

Since launch, the Famous Kids Protein Shake has rapidly gained traction across major Australian supermarket chains and convenience stores. Famous Soda Co says the product has also been endorsed by Education Australia as a recommended beverage for school tuckshops, reinforcing its nutritional credibility.

Visually, the distinctive Tetra Brik Aseptic Edge carton stands out on shelf with its sloping front panel, helping the brand cut through in a competitive beverage aisle. The packaging’s balance of form and function has played a central role in the product’s success at home and abroad, with the shake now exported to 10 international markets.

As Famous Soda Co continues to expand its portfolio of functional drinks for both children and adults, Tetra Pak remains a key partner in enabling the company’s growth and sustainability goals – demonstrating, the companies say, how smart packaging can help make food safer, healthier, and more accessible for families everywhere.
