The global winners for the 2021 WorldStar Packaging Awards will be announced during a virtual ceremony set for 9 June (8pm AEDT), and the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) is inviting everyone to attend and show their support.

This year, 10 Australian and New Zealand companies have been internationally recognised, and are nominated in 14 awards, across seven categories, with Ralph Moyle nominated for the LIfetime Achievement Award.

Companies from Australia and New Zealand combined received the fourth highest amount of WorldStar Packaging Awards nominations – just behind Japan, China and the USA. 

The ANZ contingent come from the annual Packaging Innovation & Design Awards (PIDA) programme, which is the exclusive feeder programme for the two countries into the WorldStar Packaging Awards. 

The categories where ANZ designs were nominated include Food, Beverage, Labelling & Decoration, Health & Personal Care, Household, Packaging Materials & Components, and Transit. 

Planet Protector Packaging was recognised in three categories, while NCI Packaging/Birdstone Collective made it in two. 

The 2021 WorldStar Packaging Award nominees for Australia and New Zealand are:

Food category:

  • Planet Protector Packaging for the Lobster Protector
  • Disruptive Packaging for Uniqcor for cold chain environments
  • Platypus Print Packaging for the Youfoods Meal Kit
  • Sealed Air Brand Protective Packaging for the TempGuard kerbside recyclable packaging for pre-packaged, temperature-sensitive goods

Beverage category:

  • Coca-Cola Amatil for 100 per cent recyclable rPET bottles
  • Ecolean for the Bannister Downs Dairy WA chilled pasteurised range
  • Brownes Dairy for Australia’s first renewable gable top milk carton

Labelling & Decoration category:

  • NCI Packaging and DuluxGroup for the Porter’s Paints superior crafted paint can range

Household category:

  • Pact Group for New Zealand’s Earthwise brand of PCR 75 per cent rHDPE household cleaning range
  • Birdstone Collective and NCI Packaging for the the DuluxGroup Cabot’s Ready Bucket 

Packaging Materials & Components category:

  • Planet Protector Packaging for the Lobster Protector

Health & Personal Care category:

  • Pact Group for the New Zealand Earthwise Glow Labs brand of PCR 100 per cent rPET bottle range

Transit category:

  • Planet Protector Packaging for the Lobster Protector

Packaging Design Special Award category

More than a year after Fonterra Co-operative Group raised the prospect of divesting its global Consumer and associated businesses, it has agreed to sell it to global French dairy giant, Lactalis, for AU$3.479 billion (NZ$3.845 billion).
