The Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) will be announcing the winners of the 2020 Australasian Packaging Innovation and Design Awards (PIDA) in two virtual events on 6 and 7 May, held in this format for the first time due to Covid-19 shutdown restrictions.

Industry is invited to register to join the two zoom events organised by the AIP and co-hosted by Lindy Hughson, publisher of PIDA media partners PKN Packaging News and Food & Drink Business. Hughson will provide commentary between the awards announcements and facilitate winners' responses during the event.

The finalists for the five manufacturing categories and three special awards, representing the cream of the crop in packaging design innovation and industry contribution for 2020, were announced in March.

On 6 May, at 10am (AEST), winners will be announced for the following categories: Domestic & Household; Accessible Packaging; Labelling & Decoration; Health, Beauty & Wellness; and Food.

On 7 May, at 10 am (AEST), winners will be announced for the Beverage category, as well as Sustainable Packaging; Young Packaging Professional and the AIP Special Awards.

The PIDA programme, run by the AIP, has been designed to recognise companies and individuals who are making a significant difference in their respective fields across Australia and New Zealand. The most hotly contested category, not surprisingly, was sustainability, followed by food and then beverage.

The PIDA programme is the exclusive feeder programme for the prestigious WorldStar Packaging Awards. This year, ANZ companies achieved a record tally of 21 WorldStar awards. The 2020 PIDA winners will automatically be eligible for entry into the 2021 WorldStar Packaging Awards competition.

Food & Drink Business

Fonterra has announced Anna Palairet is the new chief operating officer, having acted in the role since June 2023. CEO Miles Hurrell says Palairet has “extensive experience in operational, customer, sustainability, and sales roles”.

Food & Drink Business editor Kim Berry's take on the big news stories this week, and what caught her eye overseas. How will the Future Made in Australia Act actually be delivered? Shanghai trials traffic light labelling, and Solar Food, making protein out of (virtually) nothing at all, opens its commercial scale facility (that's it in the pic).

Food Frontier’s industry leading annual alternative proteins conference, AltProteins 24, is on in Melbourne on 10 October, with early bird tickets now available.
